At the end of Kaloko Drive in Kailua, on Hualalai, sits a meadow. The property is private and protected with wired fences and a large wooden gate. The drive was interesting. A different view of Hawai`i.

The end of Kaloko Drive (facing away)
We see the islands how the resorts market it. All the floral printed shirts, vintage-style Hawaiian music, ABC stores, extravagant shops, white sandy beaches, and clear crystal waters, it is a tourist dream. That is Hawai`i.

I see this island much differently. Along this drive, I could see the realness, the community, and the way of life. It isn't all paradise living.

The meadow on cloudy morning
The end of Kaloko Drive is rustic and not much, to others. There are bright flowers stretched down and hidden among the greenery. Every plant has a uniqueness. Beautiful.

So wake up early one morning and take a drive. Break away from the resorts and see the simply beauty of this island.

How to say:

Kaloko Drive (kah-loh-koh)

Hualalai (hoo-ah-lah-lah-eye)
