Bodies of all shapes and sizes soak in pools of natural hot springs. Clothing is optional, clearly. The sun’s rays and the heat of the pools reddens an array of colorful skin tones. It is a detox, a place of peace, and something I have never experienced before.
The drive was easy and through the hills outside Clearlake, in the northern part of California. I was excited. Once arrived, you park at the end of the resort. There is hiking and biking on the 6 or so surrounding trails around the resort. Ticks and rattlesnakes are at a high due to the paths being overloaded with tall grass. I hiked as far as I could go without the grass becoming an issue with my Birkenstock sandals. The scenery of rolling hills and the smell of sulfur had me craving a soak in the hot springs. So, I walked back to the resort.
Nervousness kicked in as I entered the "quiet zone." I was greeted by a woman in bare nakedness. I was shocked and wanted to laugh, which is my natural way I deal with awkwardness.
After the showers, there is a patio area where a cold plunge sits in a sunken bathtub. To the left are 3 hot spring flumes, each at different temperatures (100 degrees and higher). Absolutely NO electronics or sunscreen is permitted. I suggest get to the pools early! I went in a second time around 2 o'clock and there were bits of questionable hair and debris... uhhh
There are plenty of patio areas and chairs to relax in this calm and quiet getaway. The only area to talk is down below the large deck in the ‘talking flume,’ which is another little hot spring near the main swimming pool area.
The swimming pool is 3 to 5 feet deep with temperatures reaching 100 degrees. Today, it was a bit on the cooler side. Beyond the pool, you can find the sauna and massaging area (which was booked, ugh). A day pass costed me $73 from 10 am to 5 pm. You get access to the entire resort, minus the hotel and rooms. The communal area has a pool table, dining hall, kitchen, library, bathrooms, gift shop, patio seating, and even an area to showcase your musical talents.
The calm atmosphere and hippie vibe really take over the energy of the resort. People walk around in bath robes, loose dresses, or just shorts. Shoes and clothes are optional.
For those seeking adventure in a hippy-like way, visit a hot spring! Get naked and bathe in the warmth of the earth. This is just one way to connect and embrace Mother Nature. There is no hustle and rush of tourists, at this particular location. It definitely felt like time stopped and allowed the relaxation mode sink in.
